About Earth Day
Alliance, Inc.
On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans participated in teach-ins and actions across the nation to bring attention to the environmental concerns of the day. It has since been recognized as the beginning of the environmental movement.
In 1990, on the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Day, the movement went global and local. In San Luis Obispo County, grassroots activists joined with city and county agencies to coordinate the first Earth Day celebration. Originally the Earth Day Coalition (1990-1999), the group became the Earth Day Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3, in 2000.
The main purpose of the Earth Day Alliance (EDA) is to coordinate an annual free Earth Day event in order to raise awareness, address concerns, showcase solutions and present balanced modes of living for the wellbeing of each individual, the community, and the planet. It is a day to celebrate our natural resources and to network the community with for profit and nonprofit organizations, schools, and government agencies who come to share their environmental message, cause, or product. This is a day to educate, motivate and activate everyone that attends.
EDA is a volunteer organization. It is through the talents, skills and volunteer hours of San Luis Obispo County residents, students and visitors that this free event is made possible. Beginning in January of each year the EDA Board and volunteers meet weekly to coordinate another Earth Day event for San Luis Obispo County. Everyone can be involved in some way.
Earth Day in San Luis Obispo County usually takes place on the Saturday closest to the anniversary of Earth Day, April 22nd.
Funds to produce Earth Day SLO come from grants, sponsorships, vendor fees and the Earth Day drawing. Items donated to the drawing or cash donations are tax deduction.
New EDA Board Members are inducted each year. If you are interested in becoming a board member please email: earthdayslo@gmail.com or call (805) 544-8529.
