Earth Day SLO 2010
Put Your Green Footprint Forward
April 22nd, marks the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. It is considered to be the beginning of the environmental movement. Over two million Americans, from across the nation, participated in teach-ins, protests and actions to bring attention to environmental concerns: smog, oil spills, pesticide spray, etc. From then until now regulations have helped to some degree but many of the same problems exist and now we face climate change. From 40 years of activism and science we have learned that human behavior can make a difference; we can each be part of the solution. And that is why the Earth Day Alliance is asking children, teens and adults to put your green footprint forward at Earth Day SLO 2010 on Saturday, April 24. A first green step can be taking the bus. Say Earth Day and riders can travel free to and from this event.
Free to all, this is the 20th anniversary of an Earth Day in SLO. The celebration will kick off with a parade for all ages at 10:30 am and continue with exhibits, food, music and fun until 5 pm in the Mission Plaza. Over 75 exhibits will help visitors discover how to be green inside and out, at home, work, school, or travel, to reduce climate change. The point is to take one new conscious step now and over time the effect will begin to be seen or felt on a larger scale.
Earth Day SLO 2010 will feature an Eco Kid’s Village, Car-free Corridor, Green Blvd, Upscale Art Center, Alternative Travel Show, and Renewable Energy Sources. Visitors are invited to relax in the Healing Garden and enjoy delicious Green Cuisine from local vegetarian chefs. A zero waste event, all trash and scraps will be recycled or composted.
In addition to the best “green” education, several of the hottest bands on the central coast will perform at Earth Day. Making their first public performance of 2010, Zongo All Stars, will kick off a full day of music. From smooth to swing, Honeyguide, Impromptu and the Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band will keep the plaza rocking until the final minute.
Visitors will be asked to make the ‘Put your green footprint forward” pledge. Registered names will be recognized and entered into a drawing. Donated items will be available through a silent auction and dollar drawing.
This event is coordinate each year by the Earth Day Alliance a 501c3 create for the sole purpose of having a free earth day event. Sponsors include the Air Pollution Control District (APCD), First Solar, Pacific Energy, SEIU District 76 Local 1000, and Information Press.
40/20/10 What does it mean?
In 1990, the Earth Day founders called for Earth Day events to take place in cities across the nation. Luckily the grassroots community of San Luis Obispo County heard the call. The Earth Day Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3, was formed in 2000, for the sole purpose of coordinating an annual free Earth Day event to raise awareness, offer solutions and unite the community for the wellbeing of the planet. This year we recognize the 40/20/10 anniversaries. For more information call (805) 544-8529, email: earthdayslo@gmail.com or visit: www.earthdayalliance.com.
