Forty years ago, on April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans participated in teach-ins and actions to bring attention to the environmental concerns of the day.  It has been recognized as the beginning of the environmental movement.

In 1990, on the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Day, the movement went global and local.  In San Luis Obispo County, grassroots activists joined with city and county agencies to coordinate the first Earth Day celebration.  Originally the Earth Day Coaliton (1990-1999) the group became the Earth Day Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3, in 2000.  Formed for the sole purpose of coordinating an annual Earth Day event and networking and alerting the community to enviromental concerns, EDA celebrates 10 years.

EDA celebrates its 40-20-10 years of commitment to recognize Earth Day .

In recognition of this landmark year and the urgent need for awareness and action on the environmental front, the Earth Day Alliance is asking individuals, cities, and organizations to "put your green footprint forward".
